AUGUST CONTEST OVERVIEW
The Young Writers Initiative has bi-monthly contests for young writers. This month, our contest is themed around culture. What does culture mean to you? Is it your heritage? Your ethnicity? How you were raised? Where you were raised? What are the things and complications that surround culture. These theme contributes to our bi-annual literary journal. The theme for that is self-portrait. Consider this question when you are writing your piece:
How does your culture make you who you are?
This is just a guider, but how does your culture make you or the person you're writing/creating art about make you/them who you/they are? This is a very open ended prompt, but we want this contribute about how culture makes a person them, how it contributed to their self portrait.

THEME EXPLANATION
The overall theme of our literary journal is Self-Portrait. A person's "self-portrait" or their identity is formed by a variety of things, one being their culture. In your story/poem/essay/piece of art, please show their culture, what makes your character or subject who they are. We love to see and express diverse voices, so we urge you to write about experiences that you have personal experience with.
Culture can be many things. It can be the traditions and customs that come with your ethnicity. It could be of your age, like youth culture. It could be of a community you associate with that makes you you. Explore what culture means to you/the character you're portraying.
