What Does It Take To Be A Volunteer Cover Designer?
A cover designer designs the cover of a book that is going to be published, but it is far more than that.
To quote Reedsy, "Book design is more than just a few illustrations and a splash of typography. It’s about understanding how to properly balance images, text, and information within the limited space of a book’s cover. As a designer, you need to know how to design a cover that is attention-grabbing while also representative of the story within."
In certain instances, cover design is one of our few paid services, so we want to bring in the best.

Why Should I Be A Volunteer?
There are many reasons why you should a volunteer, but here are a couple:
- You are studying graphic design in college and want to gain real life experience with clients
- You want to grow your clientele for when you start your own business
- You want to help young writers achieve their dreams
- You want to hone your art skills
- You want to put something powerful and impressive on your resume
Bootcamp
TYWI cover designers go through a 3 week boot camp where we see your skills. Depending on what we see, we will either let you through or keep training you. For boot camp, you will be required to join the Slack group.
Workload
We will never put you in charge of more than one cover at once. Your workload varies depending on the client, but overall, it would not be that pressing. We make sure that all of our volunteers are taken care of, so we will protect you in instances of contempt and negative criticism.
Work Environment
The Young Writers Initiative prioritizes their volunteers. We want to create an open and fun work environment where you can get feedback from your fellow cover designers. We want this to be supportive and helpful to you as possible.
